In the dog, the signs of food allergy are usually itchy skin or digestive disturbances such as vomiting or diarrhoea. Specific diagnosis of food allergies in your dog is difficult. The most common symptoms of a food allergy/intolerance are digestive upsets or skin irritation. They are frequently characterised by itching and less commonly by gastrointestinal signs. Skin lesions on dogs are frequently located on the face, feet and ears. The most common food allergens in dogs are proteins, especially those from dairy products, beef, lamb, chicken, chicken eggs, soy or gluten (from wheat). Each time a pet eats food containing these substances, the antibodies react with the antigens and symptoms occur.
Our allergy panel comprises of huge number of allergens including vegetarian as well as non vegetarian diets. Our tests indicate whether the dog is allergic to specific foods. These are called serum IgE tests and your veterinarian will discuss whether they would be of benefit in diagnosing your pet’s condition.
